Options Recap — 7/18/2012
Stock market averages rallied around earnings and economic news Wednesday. A report early showed Housing Starts improving to a 760K rate in June, from 711k and better than the 743K that was expected. Attention the turned to Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke at 10:00 EDT. The head of the Federal Reserve told members of Congress that he expects to see gradual economic improvement moving forward. Later in the day, the Fed’s Beige Book, which offers a qualitative assessment of economic conditions, indicated that officials saw modest or moderate economic growth throughout all districts in June and July. Neither Bernanke nor the Fed Beige Book signaled that officials are poised to unleash another round of quantitative easing. Yet, a number of widely-helds – like Intel, St. Jude Medical and Honeywell – are up on earnings news and stock market averages scored gains across the Eurozone as well. Crude oil is up 46 cents to $90 a jug on weekly inventory data, but gold gave up $15 to $1574.5 an ounce. Heading into the final hour, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is now up 88 points and 28 points from session highs. The NASDAQ added 27.8 points. CBOE Volatility Index (.VIX) settled at 16.76 (unofficial) for the July expiration, but is now moving below 16 for the first time since April. VIX is off .5 to 15.98. The underlying tone of trading is bullish in the options market as well, with 7.4 million calls and 6 million puts traded across the exchanges today.
