Options Recap — 7/19/2012

Stock market averages are holding gains, as hopes for Europe and earnings from the tech sector helped offset a round of disappointing economic stats and weakness in the financials. Among the day’s dire data, the Labor Department said jobless claims rose to 386K last week, from 352K and higher than the 365K that was expected. Existing Home Sales fell 5.4 percent to an annual rate of 4.37 million in June. 4.65 million was expected. Philli Fed improved to -12.9 in July, but that was below expectations of -10. The final economic stat of the week showed the list of leading indicators down .3 percent in June and .1 percent more than expected. However, IBM is up 3.7 percent and helping to offset losses in BofA and American Express in the Dow Jones Industrial Average after the computer giant reported earnings yesterday afternoon. EBAY, Freeport McMoran (FCX), and Nokia (NOK) are also up on profit report cards. Google is seeing a nice 2.7 percent pre-earnings pop. Crude oil has rallied $2.78 to $92.95 and gold gained $10.5 to $1581 an ounce. In Europe, Germany’s DAX led an advance, adding 1 percent, and sentiment was boosted on reports German leaders are backing a bailout of troubled Spanish banks. On Wall Street, the Dow is holding a modest 30 point gain. The NASDAQ added 23.5 points. With one hour left to trade on Thursday before expiration Friday, 7.7 million calls and 6.3 million puts traded across the exchanges.
