WhatsTrading.com Options Recap — 11/15/2012

| November 15, 2012 | 0 Comments More

Stock market averages are under water again late-Thursday following a round of poor economic data. The Labor Department reported this morning that filings for jobless benefits increased to 439K in the period ended Nov 10. Economists were expecting a much smaller increase to 388K from 361K. CPI printed at .1 percent for October, which was in-line with expectations. However, the Philadelphia Fed Survey dropped to -10.7 this morning, from +5.7 and much worse that than the 0.0 that was expected. There’s a lot of talk still circulating about the fiscal problems facing Washington as well, and escalating violence in the Middle East is adding to the anxiety. At the same time, Walmart (WMT), the world’s largest retailer, posted revenues that fell short of expectations and the stock is leading the Dow lower with a loss of nearly 4 percent. With thirty minutes left to trade, the industrial average is off 56 points and the NASDAQ dropped another 15.

22 of the 24 most active options today are in the S&P 500 products — SPY and .SPX. Nov 135 puts on the SPYders (SPY) top the list. SPY is down $135.61 and the contract is .45 percent out-of-the-money heading into expiration Friday. More than 178,000 have changed hands. SPY Nov 136 and 134 puts are the next most actives, with 156K and 110K traded respectively. Moving down the list, SPY Dec 140 calls, 135 puts, 132 puts, 143 calls, and 130 puts are seeing high volume. In the SPX pit, Dec 1400 calls, 1350 puts, and 1400 puts are the most actives, and maybe seeing some rolling out of the expiring Nov 1400 straddle, which has traded 50000 contracts. Apple Nov 530 puts and 535 calls are the most actively equity options contracts today, more than 40000 traded in both. Taken together, these 22 S&P contracts and the two Apple options are among the two dozen most actively traded contracts on the day. CBOE Volatility Index (.VIX) is up .48 to 18.40 amid active and defensive trading in the options market. 7.6 million calls and 8.7 million puts traded across the exchanges so far.
