The S&P 500 notched new 5-year highs, but the gains came early in the session and the action has been mostly sideways on low volume throughout most of the day Friday. Investors cheered the latest Trade Balance numbers. Surging petroleum exports helped narrow the deficit to $38.5 billion in December, from $48.7 billion and much better than the $$45.5 billion that was expected. A separate report showed Wholesale Inventories down .1 percent in December. A .3 percent increase was expected. Stock market averages opened higher on the data and strength across Eurozone equity markets helped set the tone for positive trading as well. Spain’s IBEX helped pace the advance after climbing 2 percent. However, the euro dropped another .25 percent to 1.3363 on the dollar and continued sliding after falling yesterday on the heels of bearish commentary from ECB Pres Mario Draghi. Still, trading is quiet in the commodities market. Crude oil lost 11 cents to $95.72 and gold dropped $2.5 to $1669. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 is up 7 points and 3 points from session highs.

Overall options volumes were light this morning and slowed even further in afternoon action. Projected volume is 14.8 million contracts. With thirty minutes left to trade, 7.5 million calls and 5.8 million puts traded across the exchanges. CBOE Volatility Index (.VIX) slipped .31 to 13.19, but off morning lows of 12.89. LNKD is seeing a flurry of activity on the heels of its blowout quarter. Sandridge (SD) is seeing bearish activity, with 90,000 puts traded on the stock today. DELL is seeing an afternoon spike after its largest stakeholder said the recently proposed buyout price is too low. Buyers of Aug 14 and Jan 15 calls on DELL surfaced early in the session.
