WhatsTrading.com Options Recap — 02/15/2013

| February 15, 2013 | 0 Comments More

Trading turned a bit more cautious on expiration Friday and heading into the three-day President’s Day weekend. Walmart (WMT) dropped 2.8 percent and is the biggest loser in the Dow Jones Industrial Average after the world’s largest retailer delivered cautious comments about February sales. The news knocked the wind out of a modest rally attempt. Data released earlier showed better-than-expected manufacturing (NY Empire at 10.0 for Feb) and consumer sentiment (Univ of Mich at 76.3). Industrial Production was down .1 percent for January, however, and below expectations of +.2 percent. Elsewhere, some of the commodities are seeing a bit more volatility, as crude slid $1.42 to $95.89 and gold shed more than $30 to $160.5. The yellow metal has dropped $200 since October. Japan lost 1.2 percent and trading was mixed across Europe, as the G-20 meets in Moscow to discuss Central Bank policy and currency issues. In the US, the Dow erased a modest midday gain and is down 46. The NASDAQ dropped 12.

Overall options volumes are running at their best levels of the week, with help from the expiration and increased call ex-dividend activity in Microsoft (MSFT). With less than an hour to trade, projected volume is more than 21 million contracts. 10 million calls and 7.8 million puts across the exchanges so far. 745,000 options traded in Microsoft. Herbalife (HLF) options volume is almost 300,000 contracts on reports Carl Icahn has taken stake. Gap Stores (GPS) saw a flurry of activity around unsubstantiated chatter the company has hired an advisor to explore alternatives. 72,000 contracts traded on the retailer. March 18 calls on SPDR Financials (XLF) are busy for a second day. Lastly, VIX fell to new 5-year lows of 12.24, but has been rallying in the second half of trading and is up .17 to 12.83. Markets closed Monday. Have a great Weekend!!!
