Newmont Mining (NEM) is up $2.85 to $42.20 after gold gained $31 to $945.20 an ounce. Recent trades include 2200 March 45/50 call spreads on the ISE. Looks like buyer paid $1.24.
Potash (POT) March 85/70 put spread traded 2700X for $4.70 on the NYSE. POT was smoking early, hitting a high of $90.35. Now up $1.30 to $89.17 in active trading.
Nearly 150,000 puts traded on Vale de Rio Tuesday, with flow concentrated in March downside put strikes. Nearly 50,000 March 14 puts and 30,000 March 12 Puts traded, together creating more than 63,000 contracts of new open interest. RIM (RIMM) is the most actively traded equity options contract early Wed. Shares are trying to hold around $50 (down 12 percent) after the company lowered fourth quarter earnings guidance. Sellers have surfaced in the Feb 60s and buying interest appears to be picking up in the Feb 50s.

The day after A-Rod, one of the company’s celebrity endorsers, admitted to steroid use, the news got worse for Nike (P/C Chart, news). Downside put activity picking up, as shares trade down 7.5% near $15.70. A total of 27,000 March 12 puts have traded today, with the last 7000 trading from 40 to 44cents in the past 15minutes.
Looks like strangle buyers in Waste Management (WMI) January 2010 puts at the 27.5 strike and calls at the 30 strike. 6,400 now traded (12,800 total). Looks like they paid $7.30. Shares are down 87 cents to $23.63 ahead of Feb 12 earnings (before market).
